Moving comes with its own life changes, especially if you have kids who will be starting at a new school. Here are a few tips of how to help ease into this new stage of life for you and your kids:
Unpack the Kids First
After moving, the unpacking process can feel overwhelming and oftentimes takes weeks, if not months, to complete. However, it’s important to create a sense of normalcy for your kids which starts with their personal spaces. Choosing to unpack their rooms and daily necessities gives them a familiar space to feel more grounded making the transition easier for them.
Tour Their New School Together
Don’t just jump into school on the first day without helping your kids get familiar with the building and their classroom(s). Schedule a time to meet with their teacher and discuss what their day-to-day will look like which can ease any anxiety and get them excited!
Preparing for the First Day
Help your kids get ready for their first day the night before to make sure that they have everything they need to start their big day! Look over their schedule together and make sure they know who will pick them up after school.
Attend Back-to-School Events
One of the best ways to bring your kids out of their shells is through back-to-school events! It gives kids an opportunity to meet their classmates and get more comfortable with their environment. Meet-and-greets, orientation or playdates, can all give kids a fun opportunity to get excited about their new start.
Ease back into Routines
Before diving back into your pre-move routines, give your kids time to adjust by gently easing them into their new schedule. Remember, they are adapting to a completely new environment with their own routines, so it’s important to establish a new schedule that works for everyone once you’ve had a chance to settle in.
Enroll in Extracurricular Activities
Help your kids embrace their new environment with the things they are passionate about! Whether it’s sports, music, dance or art, encourage them to take action and not to be afraid to get involved.
Starting a new school in a new city can be challenging, but by taking the right steps, you can help your kids adapt to the transition. Start by getting them familiar with their new spaces like introducing them to their new school, participating in back-to-school events, and even getting involved in extracurricular activities. All of this will help them ease back into routines and build excitement about this new chapter.
